Metaphor

A metaphor is a figure of speech in which one word is used in place of another. An example is:

Gold there is, and rubies in abundance, but lips that speak knowledge are a rare jewel. (Proverbs 20:15)


It is obvious that Solomon is not telling us that lips are literal jewels. He is drawing a parallel between the rarity and preciousness of jewels and spoken knowledge.
